Graphic Design
Beware. Highly Opinionated. (duh. it’s my blog. XD ) Semi-bashing some things. Praising others.
Graphika Manila. And Comments.
I don’t really know what to say about it. It was nice. Not really worth P650, and not well prepared. The hosts were horrible. They faked accents and weren’t really familiar with what they were doing. Imagine! They were talking about Pixar and then they mentioned Ice Age? Ice Age isn’t made by Pixar. And the girl host had this horrible fake accent. I think she was trying to have a british accent of some sort. Although it seemed like it wasn’t her natural accent. It was pretty annoying.
Anyways, we arrived late due to my lack of ability to read a map properly. I accidentally got us lost in Makati and therefore we were an hour late. We arrived just as they went on lunch break. We missed Robert Alejandro’s talk. We went to the food court, ate lunch, then returned with Angela. Initially, it was Fee, Den, and me. We listened to talks from Pixar, Collision Theory, Acid House, and Tokidoki.
Pixar’s talk was okay. It was a bit dragging since I wasn’t really familiar with the process of 3d animation. It made me think about my initial interest in 3d animation. I think I’m still interested in 3d modeling, but the animation process did not seem too interesting. I think I would get really annoyed looking at the same thing over and over again. But I’m not really sure. Based on past experiences on basic video editing, I do get annoyed looking at the same thing over and over again, but I would manage to keep on doing it for hours. So does this mean I have fun getting annoyed? Haha! I think no matter how much I love to complain, I still like work…somehow…and am proud when I actually finish something.
Collision Theory was a bit more interesting. I still think that the t-shirt design industry is now an abused industry. There are so many people picking up on the trend. You really have to differentiate yourself from others in order to make yourself known. I’m not saying I didn’t like their talk or their work. I really did like their works, except it didn’t seem new to me. It was the best t-shirt design I’ve seen, but it’s still the same-old, same-old.
I liked the works of Acid House. Motion Design is still something new to me although I’ve seen it before. I really like their style, it reminds me of my cousin’s thesis. I most especially liked the music video they showed us. I absolutely loved it. I really like Japanese themed things and this was no exception. Although I think it would have also been better if they used short videos instead of stills but it was still really cool.
Tokidoki. Well I can’t really say anything bad about tokidoki bec I love tokidoki. I don’t own anything tokidoki though. I wish I did. I really like the milk carton plushie. :3 I wish there was a tokidoki store here. After listening to Simone…sure I think he’s so successful having a few pirated versions of his work won’t do him any harm, but I want to buy authentic products. I think having a Tokidoki store would lessen piracy. At least lessen middle-class to higher-class pirates. One of the reasons why people pirate goods is because it isn’t available locally so if we had a local store, it would lessen…hopefully.
The Q&A part was quite annoying. People kept on asking useless questions such as “What software do you use?” and “What do you think the next trend would be?”, etc.
1. Pixar uses its own software. Use any software you want. It’s the artist who makes the art anyways.
2. Although it is possible to predict the next trend, you wouldn’t really know til it comes right? So why bother asking? Why not just wait…?
Raffle time. It was really funny. Den had already left and we couldn’t claim her prize during the raffle. We were debating whether to go down and get it, but we didn’t think we could claim it for her. Then much later on, they were mentioning something about having anyone who would claim it for them bec a lot of people had gone home by then. But we were too late. They were already halfway into the raffle by then.
Insights. I need to improve on my 2d drawings. Then I want to try out animation. The frame-by-frame (is that what they call it?) kind. Then I want to try out 3d modeling and maybe 3d animation. I’m also interested in learning motion graphics/ after effects. On the sideline, I need to improve on my typography/layouting/over-all designing skills; and I need to learn how to web design. Not bec I need to but because I want to.
I’m not really sure what I want to be, but I think Acid House is my current idol now. I want to be able to make logos, do posters, etc. Stuff for print. But I also want to be able to animate, and do motion graphics as well as make 3d animations. Oh! And I forgot, I also want to learn packaging design. :D So many stuff to do… so little time… Plus I’m not really that artistic…
