Shelfari

Long time no blog! Anyways… a bit of an update on my blog. I have a Shelfari account! It’s so cool! I now have a list to keep track of the anime I watch, the manga I read, and now the books I have read! I didn’t put a lot though… like the Sweet Valley books I’ve read and such… It’s just too much of a hassle. But generally I really like the interface of Shelfari. It’s a bookshelf, and it can segregate your list into books I’m planning to read, books I’m reading, books I’ve read, and favourites, I own, and a wishlist. So it’s a good thing to keep track of what I’ve read as well as to see what other people have read so I have an idea on what I might want to read/buy next. I think I might put whatever review I come up with there as well. I’ll probably just copy and paste from here though.

So if you have a shelfari account, add me if I know you personally. http://shelfari.com/hirika

Christmas Break

Wah! I haven’t been able to post since the start of the 2nd semester. We had so much work~ x.x;;; And now…  it’s Christmas break! Although I haven’t been able to do shopping since we were working until the 2nd to the last day of class, thus I wasn’t able to give gifts to my friends :(. But work isn’t over yet… I still have to study Katakana because I feel like I’m lagging behind in class because Rudy-Sensei expects us to be familiar with it already. Then we have to work on our Psychology presentation… Then I have to study Eco since I don’t understand my prof. Not at all.

So my TTD for the Christmas Break would be: 1. Rest 2. Study Jap 3. Study Psych 4. Study Eco 5. Buy late gifts for people 6. Shop after the Christmas Rush because they usually have sales :D hahaha!

I’ve been thinking about what planner to get next year. I think I’ll be going with the Belle de Jour Planner because of the coupons.

Oh! And I might be selling ‘designer tumblers’ next year so what out for that! :D

I can’t think straight… Sleepy… Bye Bye for now. :)

My 2nd Sem Schedule

Sophomore 2nd Sem Schedule

Sophomore 2nd Sem Schedule

I’m quite happy with my schedule when it comes to the fact that I have blockmate-classmates at last. I wasn’t able to coordinate with them last semester so I had my Hi18 class by myself. This semester, the only class I don’t have a blockmate in is NSTP.

I’m sad with the timing of my classes though. I don’t know if I can manage to wake up in time for PE every MW. Perhaps I could have gotten a better PE time but I didn’t want to take up sports and I was really aiming for Taichi and that coincidentally happened to be the only time that fit my schedule since I have an 8.30 class.

I’m really excited about JSP 1 though. I hope out teacher is good and hopefully he likes anime so we can have some anime projects :3 I can write AIUEO in Hirigana as of the moment. ?????

Book Review: Brisingr by Christopher Paolini

The Inheritance Cycle (formerly known as the Inheritance Trilogy a.k.a. the books: Eragon, Eldest, and Brisingr) by Christopher Paolini is definitely the new ‘Harry Potter’, and more, for me. This series is a definite must-read!

It starts off with the story of a simple farm boy, who happened to find a dragon’s egg, thus leading to his destiny as the last free Dragon Rider, to saving his country, Alagaësia, from it’s tyrant, Galbatorix. (Super Summary!) The story is quite hard to follow since there are a lot of complicated names and a few choice of events, plus the books are long since Christopher Paolini gives a lot of effort into describing the places in the book. This is both a good thing and bad thing for me because sometimes it gets a bit boring reading such long descriptions, but at the same time, you really get to imagine the area as if it were reality.

What I like most about the Inheritance Cycle is that Christopher Paolini manages to keep his audience entertained even if his books are long, and the gap between his 2nd book Eldest, and his 3rd book Brisingr, was in itself quite long. He still managed to keep his writing style consistent, and the character development was smooth and well developed. Although, I wished he wrote more about the relationship between Arya and Eragon.

All in all, his latest book Brisingr met my expectations, and was just as good (in terms of writing style) as his previous books. Although, for me, the best book out of the three would be the Eldest, since most of the action happened there. I can’t wait for his last book! :3

Personal Rating: 9/10

~ Because there wasn’t much action compared to the Eldest.

~ Because he maintained his style, and comparing this series to Harry Potter, there was no sudden change in the personality of Eragon.

Sem Break To Do List:

Yeah… It’s a bit late to post my personal to do list for the sembreak since more than half of it has been spent already… and then 80% of that time has been devoted to sleeping like a vampire. Chomp-Chomp. I’m a bit sabaw while writing this cuz according to my vampiric sem break nature… it’s still supposed to be my sleeping time.

1. Get Driver License ( I’ve been postponing this. I hate driving, but it’s kinda fun to say I can…somewhat. )

2. Fix Table  ( I finished fixing most of it today [7-9am], on my birthday no less XD , with the help of my maid bec I’m so kiddie and allergic to dust. I can actually see it now O_O XD )

3. Practice Designing ( Well… I practiced digi-coloring and realized how annoying it is to do so bec Adobe PS is supppperrrr slooooowwwwwww… so I stopped. Then I made myself a business card with a sad excuse of a vectored me, which I haven’t had printed yet. )

4. Play FF9 ( I was doing so on the first week of the break… but I’m too lazy to do nah… I just want to sleep the sem away… which I am doing actually. )

5. Buy Clothes/Shoes ( I don’t want to spend money. I ish poor. Sadsadsad… But I need to buy new shoes and I want to buy a new dress for semi-casual occasions. )

The A. Shop At Podium

The first time I saw the A. Shop logo, for a moment I thought it was a clothes line honestly. I guess even if the design was supposed to be Apple-y, with a black background and Helvetica type that says the A. Shop, being surrounded by stores for clothes made me think it was no different. The exterior was supposedly Apple-y bec the doors and windows were made of glass, but all the other stores there had the same look so it didn’t stand out. The interior was something I liked though but I wasn’t completely awed by it. iStudio in GH had the same look – bright and white. Although I really liked their displays.

They had the latest Macbooks with the aluminum case as well as the new Macbook Pro. They also had a Mac Pro on display. It was really nice bec you get to try everything out w/ things you may use them for. They had a Canon S5 IS attached to a Macbook so I went to check it out since this was my dream digicam. I didn’t see the professional video camera ’til later on so I didn’t get to try that out. They had that music keyboard attached to the Mac Pro so I got to try that out. I also got to use Garage Band with a Fender Squire so that was fun.

Ooh! But the best thing about that place aside from the Fender Squire and Canon S5IS are the accessories. They have a lot. They even have car accessories and lots of funky speakers. But my favourite accessories were the designer USBs. They were sooooo cute. They even had Happy Tree Friend USBs. I’d get one… if it weren’t for the fact that I already have an 8GB USB and the ones they had were only 1GB and costs just as much.

Pocketful of Kids

I’m turning 19 next week, the last of my teenager years. Sometimes I can be mature considering my age, but I’m still a child at heart and will always be.

I really love toys. I even remember when I was small, I’d always look forward to Christmas, hoping to get something new and fun to play with. I was especially jealous (to the point that I’d feel like crying but I’d hold it in because it was impolite to my gift-givers) at my younger brothers because they’d always get something interesting that I’d want to play with. Being a girl and being older, I’d always end up getting clothes. Even now, I still enjoy toys. I like stuff toys the best. But I still can’t help but get attracted to toys meant for younger kids such as sand boxes, dolls, and the like.

Last night, at the 15th floor of Strata 2000, Emerald Avenue, Ortigas; we went to the launching party of Pocketful of Kids. Pocketful of Kids is a interactive ‘toy village’ which encourages the development of toddlers and kids in different aspects of their lives. They mostly carry international brands of toys, and the best thing about the place is that it’s safe and fun!

The whole place was absolutely adorable! It was a bit small, bit it was very well designed. The place was like a mixture of a toy store and a daycare center and reminded me of tv series for kids. There was a LIBRARY where they have books from Fully Booked. At that moment, they had the Twilight Series (which was meant for the parents probably), as well as children’s books. They also had a COFFEE SHOP where you could buy pots with seeds to grow in your own home. There were also some cooking materials there that were shaped like gardening equipment. Next to the door, there was a BANK, where you could buy food and drink during your stay there. There was also a TOWN HALL nicely went with the whole little village image. There was also tree which they said was going to be interactive so the kids could talk to it. There was a THEATRE area which I think might be the dining area. And lastly, there were shelves and shelves of interesting yet affordable gifts that were sorted according to the age group they were meant for. The toys were also sorted into various categories which enhanced learning abilities such as WORD SMART, PEOPLE SMART, NUMBER SMART, etc. But aside from toys for kids, there were also toys for adults such as boards games like The Game of Life.

I really really really enjoyed the place and I think you would too. It’s a place not only for the little kids, but also for those who are still kids at heart like me. There were many people much older than me at the event, yet they acted even more kiddier than me. It was really a fun sight and site. :)

Sophomore Year, First Semester

Wow! I really didn’t think my grades would be this good this semester. First of all, I failed most of my first long exams and did really bad on some midterms like SA21. In the end, I got better grades with the subjects I thought I’d do really poorly in like Th121. I thought I’d do better in Hi18 but I guess history really isn’t my forte. Especially since I’m really bad at memorization.

This is really good news for me bec I’m really hoping to be able to go to Japan to study for a short while. The JTA for Humanities has a minimum grade of a 3, but I think if I maintain this QPI or do better I’d still make it somehow. Except JTA is really expensive since it’s one semester. I’m actually hoping for a summer tour or something like that. The only problem is Japan’s summer coincides with the first semester here. I’ve been checking out schools that offer summer tours in Japan but they’re too expensive and usually it only covers the schooling and w/o plane fare, boarding, and living expenses.

So if anyone knows of a summer tour in Japan that lands on April-May or even until early June? Hopefully one that isn’t too expensive and comes w/ lodging and living expenses. Even if it doesn’t include plane fare yet.

Largest Outdoor Gallery in Asia

Last Thursday, Mom invited us, my sister and I, to an event at the Top Shelf of Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street. It was a launch party of this project called The Manila Outdoor Gallery Art Route by the Outdoor Advertising Association of the Philippines (OAAP). What they did is that they gathered 29 artists, and with the environment as their theme, challenged them with billboards as their canvas. (Although only 10 artists had their works on billboards, the other 19 had them on electronic billboards) These billboards can be found in the major highways in Metro Manila like EDSA, NLEX, etc.

I really like their concept! More so because I am a Fine Arts Student. Art is usually viewed as something expensive, something middle class and lower class people can not afford and can not obtain. Art is also viewed as something limited to rich people’s homes or in museums. We learned in FA101: Introduction to Aesthetics, with Fr. Rene Javellana, that art isn’t something limited to these common descriptions or definitions. In fact, art can not be defined because it is constantly changing. Art is anything and everything. Art was once viewed as only those inspired by the Classical era, but now, even scrap metal can become art! (Refer to my previous post about Ral Arrogante)

Art is available for everyone and you don’t need to go to museums to find art. Art is all around you, in the environment. You see art everyday without knowing it; from shops to furniture to advertisements… You just have to change your own definition of art. Besides, “Beauty is the eyes of the beholder.”, right?

So this project was something I considered really great. Art should be available to everyone and what better way to communicate your ideas than to showcase them on billboards which people see everyday especially when stuck in traffic? And the theme was a common but important one, environment. Traffic is a cause of stress, and is a health hazard because of all those car honking, smog, and minutes of not doing anything. The artworks then become stress relievers, as well as a way to communicate, for those on the road.

The launching was simple yet elegant. They had this cool fountain made of wine glasses with a champagne bottle pouring red liquid over the glasses. They also served a small dinner, and gave a short but concise talk about the project. There were also miniature versions of their artworks available for viewing that night, and a few of the artists were also present at the launch.

We got to meet MM Yu! I didn’t remember her name at first but my sister reminded me. We saw her artworks at the Ateneo Art Gallery before. My sister got her autograph for me and we got to take pictures with her.

We also met Kuya Az. In fact he was the only person my sister and I truly knew that night. We go way back since high school when he coordinated a drawing class workshop during one of our fairs for the Computer Club. The last time I saw him was probably… back during the time when I still cosplayed. That was probably 2-3 years ago. How time flies~

After the event, we went downstairs to go book hunting. Oh how I love bookstores! But it makes me sad also bec there are so many things I want, and my list keeps on getting longer, but I am unable to buy them bec I’m poor. There were a lot of design books I wanted to invest in and buy… but I didn’t have the money. Defeated, I sat down at Starbucks on the 3rd floor and read their magazines (specifically Meg Magazine) while waiting for my mom and sis.

AdMU Random Number

Ugh. My Random Number for the 2nd Sem is absolutely horrible. I wanted a good RN pa naman sana so I could get a good Foreign Lang subject, teacher, and time slot. Well, to be fair… I’ve gotten a fair deal when it comes to RNs so far. 1st sem of both this year, and last year, my freshman year, I was in the first batch. 2nd sem of my freshman year I was in the 3rd batch. Although I missed my RN during the first sem of freshman year bec I got confused with the ETAs (Expected time of arrival).

This sem, the 2nd sem of my sophomore year, my random number is… DUN DUN DUN!!! 178!

School of Management (SOM): Wow! Ganda! First Batch Ka!

SOSocialScience (SOSS) & SOScience and Engineering (SOSE): Ok pa! Second Batch! Pag 3rd Batch kasi pangit nah.

Guys… SOHumanities (SOH) po ako. Yes, there is a Fine Arts Program in Ateneo. And no… ID does not stand for Interpretive Dance or Industrial Design or Intelligent Design or Bachelor of Foreign Affairs Majoring in I Don’t know or Bachelor of Future Apparitions Majoring in Impending Doom (I made that up :D ). I am a Bachelor in Fine Arts, Majoring in INFORMATION DESIGN student.

And going back to the topic… SOH has the least number of students…therefore 178 in SOH means… I’m in the last batch. T_T nuuu~ We all know what being in the last batch means. You get all the terror teachers, in horrible time slots, with looong breaks, with having to either wake up super early in the morning or going home late at night and perhaps even both. Good bye basic Japanese with a nice sensei. :( Good bye last chance to get a good and easy PE. And good bye other subjects I might have to choose time slots for. Say hello to early mornings, late nights, and scary teachers. T_T
